HSL, a partnership between The Doctors Laboratory, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, have appointed Walter Lilly to deliver a new facility providing modernised pathology services for the NHS Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care System (ICS).

Following the strip-out of an existing building to shell and core, Walter Lilly is undertaking the Cat A and B fit out of clinical and non-clinical space totalling 3,250m2. This includes the creation of an automated laboratory and the installation of a new 930m² Containment Level 3 (CL3) suite, designed to support pioneering scientific research.

The project also includes the design and installation of brand new MEPH systems to achieve compliance with the latest building regulations, the installation of a new goods lift and refurbishment of an existing passenger lift, the construction of a new ancillary outbuilding to house a waste store and gas generators, a series of external alterations, and a light-touch refurbishment of associated landlord areas.

Following completion, patients under the care of Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as 250 associated GP and community health practices, will benefit from improved, more resilient testing services conducted using state-of-the-art technology.
