Whilst the industry is making progress towards gender equality, with more women pursuing careers in construction than ever before, Walter Lilly acknowledges that significant challenges still remain. In 2024, women held just 15% of professional roles in the UK construction industry. We are proud to be exceeding this national average, with females comprising almost one-fifth of our workforce.
Women in Construction Week 2025, running from 3rd – 8th March, is about celebrating the incredible strength, knowledge and impact of women in the industry. This year’s theme, Together We Rise, honours the transformative role women are playing in shaping the future of construction. Research has proven that diverse teams are more likely to come up with new and innovative solutions, with the contributions of women enhancing the efficiency, sustainability, and execution of these ideas in practice.
To navigate the challenges of a traditionally male-dominated work environment, women are leading a cultural shift which promotes respect, collaboration, and professionalism at every level with the help of empowering colleagues. At Walter Lilly, our inspiring women play a vital role across all strands of the business, from managing sites and securing new contracts to leading commercial and design teams, maintaining essential systems, and improving our social value and sustainability business practice.
We are committed to our long-term engagement with local schools to raise awareness around the diverse roles and pathways into construction. This allows us to shine a light on the opportunities available for women in the field that many young girls might not otherwise discover. Our female employees are closely involved with these initiatives, showcasing strong representation to attract more young women into the industry.
As we celebrate both Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day, which falls on the 8th of March, we want to thank the exceptional women within our business, whose hard work and dedication remains essential to our success. We also express our gratitude to the entire Walter Lilly workforce for continuing to support company-wide efforts to create a truly inclusive workplace that fosters equality and opportunity for all.
