Congratulations to the team at our MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS) project who recently received our highest – almost perfect – score of 44 out of 45 from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Located on the Hammersmith Hospital site, adjacent to existing medical research facilities, a school, sports field, and within the vicinity of a blue light route, the team were commended for their outstanding neighbourly relations and management on this logistically complex new build project.

We are incredibly proud of the team’s efforts as it is excellent validation from an organisation set up to raise standards in the construction industry.

CCS monitored the following when visiting our site:

• Respect for the community
• Care for the environment
• Valuing our workforce.

Stephen Brown, Monitor for the CCS, said: “It was a pleasure to visit this important MRC project again as it nears handover. The appearance of the site is as good as it was at the start, which is no mean feat considering the size of the project, the amount of deliveries and the high number of workforce engaged. Also of note is the strong relationship developed with the client team and the hospital facilities management team.”

Here’s a snapshot of the areas where they scored us ‘Excellent’:

• Keeping the perimeter of the construction site safe and secure, and surrounding areas clean, tidy, and free of litter, mud, and dust; to protect the community and passers-by.
• Reducing the effects of nuisance, disturbance, and intrusion on potentially impacted communities.
• Communicating environmental plans, controls and performance to the workforce, community, and public.
• Embedding a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
• Assessing the needs of the workforce to drive an improvement in wellbeing including mental health awareness training and mental health first aiders.
• Ensuring the provision of suitable, hygienic, and well-maintained welfare facilities.
• Ensuring the competency and legitimacy of the workforce.

Stuart Yates, Walter Lilly’s Project Director who has led the construction of this new building, said, “The success of this project is a testament to the outstanding performance by everyone involved to date. We’ve achieved so much over the last two years, and we’ll be proud to hand over this new, state-of-the-art science research facility to the London Institute of Medical Sciences in a few months’ time. Project management isn’t just about the final result, though. It’s also about how a project is managed and how it affects the people in and around it. Walter Lilly has worked tirelessly to show respect for the neighbouring community, care and respect for the environment and our people throughout the job. It’s great to see our efforts and hard work rewarded with such a great CCS score!”

Steven Murray, Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality Manager at Walter Lilly, said, “44 out of 45 from the CCS… Wow, what a score! This is our highest achievement so far. We are very proud here at Walter Lilly of our company average CCS score of 41.1, well above the industry’s current average of 38.65. We place great importance on minimising our impact on local communities and the environment, as well as maximising our care and attention on the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone who walks onto our building sites. About the project
The Medical Research Council (MRC) London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS) project involves the design and construction of a 12,070m2 new build nine-storey biomedical research facility. The new state-of-the-art facility will house CL2 laboratories, sophisticated imaging equipment including confocal microscopy suite and a cryogenic electron microscopy suite, write-up spaces, public engagement areas including a 120-person seminar room and café, a data centre and central open atrium with a feature staircore.
