This summer we were happy to host seven junior design engineers from our consultant friends at Edward Pearce, MG Partnership and Slender Winter Partnership for their ExSite Experience. Over the course of three days, they had a chance to get hands on experience on our large new build project which is currently undergoing extensive installation of the M&E services. Buddied with our M&E Services Manager, the group spent time with the site team and gained familiarity with the management procedures, quality assurance and design coordination processes in place.
Day 1: The engineers underwent a Health and Safety induction and were shown around the site. Along with getting familiar with the site, the engineers also learned about tools used to manage the project such as BIM modelling, Evercam time lapse, management systems such as ViewPoint, CEMAR and more.
Days 2 and 3: In teams, the engineers completed a practical session where they got to actively help with an installation under direct supervision, followed by the opportunity to watch the testing of the newly installed services. The group had the chance to work alongside the M&E installation teams to gain first hand experience with domestic plumbing, HVAC pipefitting, and electrical installation.
The group found the practical session very valuable as they were not only able to see the installation process, but they were also able to talk to the installation team and ask them about common occurrences and what they can do to help from a design perspective.
It was fantastic to provide this opportunity to the design engineers and give them a more holistic understanding of the M&E services design coordination and installation process.
