With this year’s UK Construction Week conference being hosted virtually to adapt to the current pandemic circumstances, we reflect on the different ways technology is having a positive influence on our delivery of construction projects.
At Walter Lilly we are always looking at ways to improve our methods of working, striving for efficiency. 18 months ago we adopted Matterport technology to allow us to capture 3D virtual site tours as part of our internal documentation process for site compliance and reporting. With the effect of COVID-19 and associated travel restrictions, we have taken the opportunity to further the use of this product on selected projects for the benefit of the entire project teams.
The Matterport software and camera allows us to provide our design team members and clients with 3D photo image tours of real world spaces, allowing users to visually take anyone immediately to a room or location on site, no matter whether that person is in the UK or abroad. The entire project team and our clients can now view our current progress, engage in resolving design items and overcome difficult interfaces to name but a few benefits, all without attending site. Importantly no download, subscription or software is required by project team members to access these 3D tours. Moreover, we have also undertaken building condition surveys with Matterport at the start of our projects to ensure the design team can view and account for existing site conditions and constraints when progressing through early design stages.
