Queen Mary and Westfield College’s Biosciences Innovation Centre, built by Walter Lilly, is a new 4,000 m² addition to the campus sited in Whitechapel. This state of the art facility provides a 140-seat lecture theatre, teaching facilities, freezer stores, offices, meeting rooms and a café area. Upon construction, it was the largest purpose-built laboratory space for rent in London, ideal for start-ups or existing science or tech companies looking for a base in London.

The external cladding of two of the façades is unique and eye-catching and designed to stand-out in the local area. Made from structural glazing and a tensioned mesh of perforated copper, it acts as a bris soleil architectural feature which deflects sunlight, reduces heat and provides adequate shade within the building.

The remaining two façades, which face the adjoining campus buildings, are clad in a unitised glazing system above the ground floor.
