Kingston University, Knights Park Campus
The project created a new, larger home for the existing Learning Resource Centre (LRC) by building a glass roof, supported by two tied steel arches spanning the full width of the quad. The arches found their bearing onto existing masonry via stub steel columns over an existing courtyard at the heart of the Quadrangle building and by converting a large part of the ground floor.
Sustainability measures included the excavation and construction of a below ground concrete pit to house both a rainwater harvesting and storm water attenuation tank.
The University successfully remained in occupation throughout the works and access into and around the buildings was safely maintained. A degree of phasing was used to minimise disruption to the occupants of the campus as far as possible. The project achieved a Good BREEAM rating.
