Converting a redundant Grade II listed church for the Cadogan Estate, Walter Lilly restored this iconic building into a 3,110m2 venue for orchestral concerts, exhibitions and festivals, and the permanent home for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Extensive refurbishment was required throughout to safeguard the building for the future and to satisfy the venue’s new requirements. Works included the enlarging of the stage, new seating across steeply raked stalls and low gallery to accommodate 950 seats, improved disabled access and fire separation, and repairs and refurbishment of the structure.

Whilst the original church benefited from an existing auditorium, the ceiling and the roof was re-detailed for the installation of new acoustic insultation. Audio Visual and lighting were key to the success of the building with new performance lighting and sound system installed within the auditorium, including computer controlled theatrical lighting. A large screen for films and visual presentations can be lowered and allows performances elsewhere to be relayed live by satellite or the internet.

The stained glass windows were removed and carefully restored at our specialist contractor’s workshop.
