7th July Memorial

Hyde Park, London

On Tuesday 7 July 2005, 52 victims lost their lives during a series of devastating bomb attacks in London. This memorial project was commissioned by a project board consisting of The Royal Parks, the Department of Culture Media and Sport and elected representatives of the bereaved families.

Within the memorial, each of the 52 lives are represented by individual solid-cast long-lasting stainless steel ‘stelae’ arranged in four groups, one for each bomb location, namely: King’s Cross, Tavistock Square, Aldgate and Edgware Road. In addition, a cast stainless steel plaque is located at the head of the memorial containing the names of each of the victims.

The project was the recipient of a RIBA Awards for the Arts & Leisure Category, 2010 and opened by HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall in a ceremony attended by senior political figures and the families of the 52 killed, on the fourth anniversary of the disaster.

Walter Lilly was honoured to be associated with such an important and moving project.
