Environmental
Walter Lilly fully recognise our responsibility to manage the impact of our activities on the environment and are committed to good environmental practice and sustainable initiatives.
In addition to our accreditation to ISO 14001, which validates the standard of our environmental management system and procedures, Walter Lilly has instigated a number of initiatives to enhance our environmental capability and performance:
Three members of our staff are amongst only 5,000 Chartered Environmentalists in Great Britain. Design Managers Richard Peacock & Malcolm Burton and Deputy Project Manager Mark Sullivan have achieved their CEnv (Chartered Environmentalist) status. This qualification increases our commitment to environmental best practice and professional standards and gives weight to our expertise in this field. Several other members of staff are currently studying for their qualification, awarded by the Society for the Environment.
Walter Lilly has a team of Environmental Champions drawn from various members of staff. Their role is to promote the environment and sustainability across the company. Mark Sullivan (CEnv), Reece Hardy, Max Pritchard and Pawel Pruczkowski are currently involved in medium and long term goal setting for the Company’s environmental performance and in identifying our stakeholders’ requirements in these fields. Their research will enable Walter Lilly to review current policy and procedures, ensuring that we are able to meet the expectations of our Clients, Design Teams, Local Authorities and Subcontractors.
Walter Lilly has undertaken a number of projects in recent years that have involved BREEAM ratings. These have achieved National BREEAM Awards, notably the New Stores Building for DEFRA (National BREEAM Industrial Award 2010) and The Mills Building, also for DEFRA (National BREEAM Bespoke Award 2006).
As part of our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency we are taking steps to measure those sources of CO2 emissions that are easily quantifiable. These include electricity and gas usage in offices, on site fuel usage and the use and methods of transport. This information will be used to set targets for reduction, along with information obtained through our individual Site Waste Management Plans.
We encourage our subcontractors and suppliers to plan their deliveries to avoid unnecessary journeys, to also use timber from sustainable sources and to consider their use of packaging to minimise waste.
Walter Lilly provides a comprehensive Training Plan for staff covering health, safety and environmental issues.
We employ, where possible, local people who have the appropriate skills and make use of local businesses and suppliers, subject to acceptance on our approved Supply Chain. Additionally we support and encourage the use of public transport and use timber from sustainable sources wherever possible.
Our Waste Carriers as a minimum all sort and recycle waste at their transfer stations and many sites operate a segregated waste management system.
