Traditional two stage new build four storey concrete frame building comprising primary laboratory space, a genomics suite, offices and conference facilities.
The external envelope comprised a challenging combination of different elements, including curtain walling, composite cladding, Reglit and traditional brickwork.
Structural challenges included forming a 7m deep basement and coordinating the integration of a large structural steel frame and staircases. Finishes included the application of specialist paint and attention to detail where high level services were exposed in occupied areas in lieu of suspended ceilings. Services installed included full environmental controls, fume cupboards and microbiological safety cabinets and sophisticated fire and safety systems. The building was completed for occupation in December 2006.
The Centre specialises in research in cardiology, neuroscience and sickle cell disease, with a major focus on stem cell research.
