Health, Safety & Environmental Management

Walter Lilly considers safety to be the number one priority and dedicates substantial resource and time to ensure that everyone involved in our projects stays safe and healthy. Walter Lilly has a good safety record – and we work hard to keep it that way. The AIR for 2007 was 517.

The company is supported by the Health & Safety Department of our parent company, Renew Holdings plc. Regular site safety inspections are undertaken by the Regional Health & Safety Advisors.

Some of the regular measures taken are:

  1. All staff and operatives new to site undergo a thorough induction prior to starting work. This covers general and site specific risks.
  2. Risk Assessments and Method Statements are prepared for activities on site so that the risks can be identified and, where possible reduced or eliminated.
  3. Regular safety inspections on every site, carried out by our dedicated Safety Adviser. Advises sites of any nonconformance issues and suggests areas for improvement. After the inspection he prepares a report, which is circulated electronically to other key members of staff, who then monitor that any non-conformance issues are dealt with immediately. Our Construction Director also receives copies of these reports and reviews them immediately.
  4. All the production staff undertake informal site inspections of projects other than their own at regular intervals and the results of these are circulated to the site team involved.
  5. Regular toolbox talks are undertaken on site using the CITB GT700 Toolbox Talks.
  6. Our Construction Director meets regularly with the Safety Adviser and Safety Administrator to review trends and plan initiatives.
  7. All production staff undertake the CITB 5 day Site Management Safety Training Scheme, renewable every 5 years, 4 day First Aid at Work Course, renewable every 3 years and are CSCS card holders. Additional training is also undertaken as appropriate, for example Scaffold Inspection, CDM Regulations and Fire Co-ordination.
  8. All staff have access, via the company intranet to the CITB GE 700 Construction Site Safety Manual, CITB, DT700, Tool Box Talks, company policies, procedures, guidance documents and standard documentation.
  9. Walter Lilly has a Safety Committee that meets quarterly, comprised of members of staff from various parts of the business. This ensures that everyone in the company is involved in safety – on site and in the office. The committee meetings are chaired by te Construction Director with the Managing Director in attendance.
