Walter Lilly were proud to be represented at the BRE's BREEAM Annual Award Ceremony last night held at ecobuild 2010 in Earls Court, London where they were part of the winning team for the National BREEAM Industrial Award 2010.

Collecting the award on behalf of the project were the Veterinary Laboratories Agency's Chief Executive Peter Borriello and Business Director Chris Morrey.

What is BREEAM?

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings, with over 110,000 buildings certified and over half a million registered. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.

BREEAM provides clients, developers, designers and others with;

• market recognition for low environmental impact buildings
• assurance that best environmental practice is incorporated into a building
• inspiration to find innovative solutions that minimise the environmental impact
• a benchmark that is higher than regulation
• a tool to help reduce running costs, improve working and living environments

The BREEAM Awards recognise and reward those involved in the design and construction of the highest scoring buildings certified under BREEAM that year. 

A BREEAM ‘EXCELLENT' rating is a pre-qualification, so the winners truly represent the UK's top examples of sustainable design. The awards are not subjective as each development has been independently assessed and certified.

In order to win an award, each building must have excelled in every environmental category within BREEAM (e.g. from Energy to Ecology) and therefore winners represent a holistic approach to delivering environmental sustainability.

Walter Lilly were also previous winners of the The 2006 BREEAM Bespoke Award for The Mills Building, Veterinary Laboratory Agency, Weybridge.

BREEAM Rating & Score: EXCELLENT 83% Architect: Architon LLP This development housed the 25 staff that form the Animal Services Unit of the Veterinary Laboratories Agency. The development achieved very high scores across all BREEAM categories, and gained the maximum of 100% of the available credits in three categories, namely, Management, Energy and Pollution.
